Alberta Health Services is extending a contaminated water advisory for the Elbow River between Sandy Beach and 9th Avenue S.E. and is asking people not to swim in or drink the water.

The problem is elevated levels of fecal coliforms that were first detected in July. At that time, the advisory did not include Sandy Beach or Stanley Park, but the warning has now been extended.

Swimming in the water could lead to inadvertently swallowing some water, which could lead to vomiting and diarrhea, as well as skin, ear and eye infections.

Signage has been put up at the locations warning of the contamination, and routine testing will continue to determine water quality.

This advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
