Two bodies have been recovered from Lake Newell, near Brooks Thursday night. They are believed to be of two brothers who went missing after their canoe tipped over late Tuesday afternoon.

28-year-old John Giesbrecht and his 15-year-old brother Peter were fishing with a friend when the boating accident happened. The 14-year-old friend was rescued by a nearby resident.

None of the young men in the boat were wearing lifejackets.

The bodies were located on the north side of the lake in five and half metre deep water, equivalent to 18 feet.

Rescue crews used a side scanner sonar which was purchased for this search by Alberta Parks and Recreation Officers.

The sonar, which can read a surface area of more 15 metres, detected the bodies at the bottom of the lake. Divers were then able to find them.

The bodies have been turned over to Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy and to positively identify the victims.

Brooks RCMP with the help of the Lethbridge Fire Department Dive Team and the Alberta Parks and Recreation Conservation Office were all involved in the search.
