Two people are in hospital after they were involved in a serious crash that ended up tying up traffic on the TransCanada Highway for several kilometres.

The crash, which occurred at just after 6 p.m. on Tuesday, was about 15 km south of Field.

The two vehicles were driving at highway speeds when the crash took place, and there are reports that one of the vehicles involved went down an embankment and caught fire.

STARS, which attended the scene 45 minutes east of Golden, says one person needed to be cut out of their vehicle and was airlifted to hospital in Calgary.

The second patient was taken to hospital in Canmore.

Their condition is not known.

Traffic was shut down for several hours following the crash, but Highway 1 is now clear.
