Mount Royal University’s Board of Governors has approved a controversial budget that will see eight programs suspended at the Calgary school.

Officials say it’s been a difficult process to make the final decision and they are looking for alternate ways to provide theatre, music, disability Studies, and a post graduate certificate program for journalism.

The school hopes to offer some of these programs through continued education.

They’re also in talks with Bow Valley College to possibly take on the Disability Studies program.

MRU’s budget was cut in the provincial budget released in March, so the school needed to cut the programs in the 2013-14 budget to make up for at $14M shortfall.

Now, the province will need to approve the school’s new budget.
