Shoppers in Calgary’s Chinook Centre will have a new luxury store to browse in time for Christmas 2014.

American retail giant Nordstrom announced plans on Thursday to serve customers with full stores starting in fall 2014.

The company said in a release that they will be working with Cadillac Fairview to lease retail shopping locations in Calgary, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Toronto.

The company says that the location in Calgary will be the first one to open in the country.

Nordstorm will be moving into the space that will be vacated by Sears in the Chinook Centre.

It will also be moving into vacated space in Rideau Centre in Ottawa, the Pacific Centre in Vancouver.

A new location will also be built inside Sherway Gardens in Toronto.

"It's exciting to finally have this opportunity to better serve our Canadian customers closer to home and we can't wait to open our doors," said Erik Nordstrom, president of stores for Nordstrom, Inc. "Cadillac Fairview has been instrumental in helping us get started in Canada, and we're thrilled to be part of these premier shopping destinations. While we're fortunate to have many loyal Canadian customers who've shopped with us over the years, we recognize we're new here and that we have to earn our customers' business. We look forward to what we will learn and are grateful for the chance to better serve our Canadian customers."

Nordstrom will be opening their stores on the following schedule:

  • Fall of 2014: Chinook Centre, two levels, approx. 140,000 square feet
  • Spring of 2015: Rideau Centre, two levels, approx. 157,000 square feet
  • Spring of 2015: Pacific Centre, three levels, approx. 230,000 square feet
  • Fall of 2016: Sherway Gardens, two levels, approx. 138,000 square feet

The chain also said that it would be continuing to explore opportunities to open additional stores in Canada including locations for Nordstrom Racks, its off-price retail division.

Nordstrom is the latest in a growing number of international retailers setting up shop in Canada.

High profile international brands including Anthropologie, J. Crew, Marshalls and Topshop have established storefronts in Canada, with several other coveted fashion brands such as Ted Baker London, Kate Spade New York, Ann Taylor and Loft all set to open their first Canadian outlets this fall.

The arrival of U.S.-based Target is also looming, with plans for the discount giant set to open 125 locations across the country next spring.

It is also rumoured that department store Bloomingdale’s is in talks with Hudson’s Bay Co. to expand into Canada, citing Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary as prime locations.

Canadians wanting to get a jump on Nordstrom's Canadian storefronts can already shop at the store's website, where prices for customers north of the border account for currency conversion, shipping fees and customs charges.

Since Nordstrom got its start as a Seattle shoe store in 1901, it has grown into a chain of more than 230 stores across the United States.
