Northeast fire sends one to hospital, claims pet parrots

Shortly after noon, fire crews responded to a home in the 6000 block of Memorial Drive N.E. The two residents of the home escaped the structure under their own power and directed firefighters to the home’s kitchen, which was engulfed in flames.

Fire crews successfully extinguished the blaze before it spread throughout the house.

One of the residents, a man in his thirties, suffered smoke inhalation and was transported by ambulance to hospital.

A number of pet parrots were inside the home during the fire. The birds did not survive.

An investigation into the fire is underway.
