The Timmins fire department was at the scene Monday evening of a fire in Downtown Timmins on 3rd Avenue.

Timmins firefighters responded to a call in the downtown around 4:30 Monday afternoon.

Officials told CTV News that a fire broke out in the basement of a vacant building on 3rd Avenue.

The building, once known as ‘Streetwear,’ has been vacant and boarded up for some time.

Fire officials said no one was in the building when they arrived on the scene and at they don’t yet know how it started.

The fire was extinguished quickly, but it produced a lot of smoke.

The building is located near the Balsam Street intersection and beside Busch Jewellers, which has been open for more than 60 years.

The building will be guarded throughout the night until a crew can go in it Tuesday to investigate the cause.
