Police are investigating after a fatal crash closed a portion of a rural highway south of Langdon on Tuesday night.

At about 11 p.m., emergency crews were called to the scene of a crash on Highway 797 just north of Highway 22X.

Police say two vehicles were involved in the crash and the drivers of both vehicles were the only occupants.

One driver was pronounced dead at the scene while the other, a man in his 30s, was transported to hospital in Calgary in serious condition.

EMS says the patient needed to be extricated from his vehicle.

Highway 797, between Highway 22X and the Hamlet of Langdon, was closed for about five and a half hours for the investigation. It has since been reopened.

There are no details on the cause of the crash.

The identities of the victims have not been released.

Police haven’t made mention of any charges.

Earlier this year, two people, both residents of Langdon, were killed in a crash on the same highway, north of the community.
