The graphic notes of a Calgary Police Service homicide detective indicate the investigation into the disappearance of a five-year-old boy and his grandparents was deemed a homicide investigation from the start.
In an affidavit, filed in provincial court and now made public, CPS detective Dave Sweet said responding officers located a significant amount of blood in the Parkhill home of Alvin and Kathy Liknes in June of 2014. Blood covered the bedroom furniture, a stairwell, and the kitchen of the home.
At the time of the couple's disappearance, the Liknes were watching their grandson Nathan O'Brien.
The affidavit, which was used to secure a search warrant, said drag marks and a dumbbell covered in blood were located on the property.
Nathan's mother located the bloodied home while arriving to picking up her son.
In May of this year, a judge ordered 55-year-old Douglas Garland to stand trial on three counts of first degree murder following a preliminary inquiry in connection to the deaths of Nathan O'Brien, Alvin Liknes and Kathy Liknes..
The evidence heard at the inquiry remains under a publication ban.
