A 35-year-old woman suffered multiple injuries and is in serious condition in hospital after she was run down by a pickup truck as it fled a gas station in the city's northwest on the weekend.
Police were called to the scene of a hit and run at a Centex gas station near the 1800 block of 16 Avenue N.W. at about 11:00 a.m. Sunday.
When they arrived, they found a female employee of the gas station in the middle of 16 Avenue, suffering from serious injuries.
Witnesses told police that the victim, whose identity has been confirmed as Maryam Roshani, confronted two people who had left the gas station without paying for their fuel.
Roshani spotted the truck parked at a nearby Home Depot and blocked its path in an attempt to get payment for the fuel.
The driver of the truck suddenly drove into her and she was carried on the hood for a considerable distance before she fell under the wheels and was run over in the westbound lane of 16 Avenue.
“I was picking out some plants when I heard some yelling,” said Rod Lechelt, who witnessed the argument from outside the Home Depot entrance “She was standing outside of a big pickup truck, yelling at the guy inside of it. He immediately backed up and then pulled out (towards 16 Avenue).”
“The next thing I heard was a bunch of screaming so I ran out and she was laying out on the ground.”
Roshani is married, and has a six-year-old son. Her husband is staying with her in the hospital and a neighbour is taking care of their son.
Friends tell CTV she is originally from Iran, and had originally relocated to Calgary from Montreal.
She remains in a coma in the ICU at the Foothills Hospital.
Police have looked over surveillance footage from neighbouring businesses and have released descriptions and images of the possible suspects.
The suspects are described as:
- Caucasian males
- 20 to 25 years old
- Slim builds
Police say the driver had brown hair and the passenger was blonde and was wearing a cowboy hat at the time.
Officers say the truck was stolen and is described as:
- 2006 Ford Super Duty pickup truck
- Alberta licence plate EUX378
Police say the same truck is also believed to be involved in a gas theft at a station in the 8400 block of Bowfort Road N.W on Friday June 5 at about 7:30 p.m. and say the passenger filled up and then left without paying.
Anyone with information about the location of the truck or the identities of the suspects, is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service, 403-266-1234, or Crime Stoppers.
