The Canada Border Services Agency has charged a Red Deer man in connection with an attempted to smuggle a woman into Canada at the Carway border crossing.
On October 26, 2013, Mark Brian Abramenko entered the country and upon inspecting his vehicle at the crossing, CBSA officials say they found a woman concealed in his vehicle.
Officials say the woman was identified as a person who was previously denied entry into Canada.
Abramenko is scheduled to appear in Lethbridge Provincial Court on September 15.
“I’m proud of our officers and investigators for their diligence in this case. This case demonstrates our commitment to preserving the security of our borders and protecting those persons who may be vulnerable and at risk,” said Kim Scoville, CBSA Acting Regional Director General, Prairie Region in a release.
This is the second time that authorities have laid a charge of human smuggling in Alberta this year.
In June 2014, Richard James Watt was sentenced to 16 days in jail and an $8,000 fine for aiding and abetting a foreign national.
The CBSA says that everyone seeking entry into Canada must report to authorities.
Any suspicious activity concerning entry into Canada should be reported to the CBSA Border Watch toll-free line at 1-888-502-9060.
