The City of Calgary has begun extensive repair work on a popular southeast park near the intersection of Southland Dr. and Deerfoot Tr.
A major portion of Sue Higgins Park, nestled on the banks of the Bow River, was submerged in June’s flooding.
Work has begun to remove large amounts of river debris, garbage, damaged trees, and other hazards from the 60 acre park. Repairs of sinkholes and unstable riverbanks are underway.
Prior to the flooding, the park contained the largest fully fenced, off-leash dog area in the city.
“One of the attractions to this park is that it’s fenced, so the dogs can actually run at large,” says City of Calgary Parks representative Justin Brown. “It has to be re-fenced. With over 90 per cent of the fence damaged, and over 70 per cent of them destroyed, that’s been a major challenge.”
Officials are warning park visitors of the hazards of muddy sections, slippery surfaces and scattered debris.
A small section of the park has re-opened and the city hopes to have the whole park open by the end of the year.
