The American retailer that sells everything from luggage to lunch boxes is gearing up to open three stores in Calgary on Tuesday.

Target will open 22 locations in Western Canada on May 7, 2013 which includes stores at Chinook Centre, Forest Lawn Shopping Centre and Market Mall.

Stores will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sundays.

Many are taking over the retail space vacated by Zellers.

“We spent $11 to $12 million per store, on renovating these stores and pretty much completely gutted them out and its everything from the design of the walls to the signing to the floor but we really spent a lot of time thinking about how do we bring the target experience to Canada and our store lay-out and design really supports that,” said John Morioka Senior Vice-President of Marketing, Target Canada.

A store at the Shoppes at Shawnessy will open on May 14 and stores are also planned for Signal Hill and Sunridge Mall.

The retailer will open 124 stores across the country in 2013 and many will also have Starbucks and in-store pharmacies.

“So we’re really looking to sort of, really maintain the foundation of Target but really make sure we have nods to Canada and make sure we’re relevant here as well, “said Morioka.

Three stores in Edmonton are also set to launch on Tuesday and several more will be opening up in Manitoba and B.C.

The Minneapolis-based company has over 1800 stores in North America and will put out its first Canadian store flyer on May 24.
