Any time a police officer is accused of a crime it's a shock to the community, even when the officer is retired.

54 year old Steve Huggett is charged with two counts of child pornography.

Police laid the charges in April, but the news is just breaking now.

Retired Constable Steve Huggett was a twenty five year veteran of the Calgary Police Service.

He's facing child pornography charges following an investigation by the Southern Alberta Integrated Child Exploitation, or ICE Team.

Calgary's police chief Rick Hanson didn't want to comment on the incident, but offered this. "I think any time an ex-officer or a serving officer is charged with a criminal offense it's disheartening, but like I say when it's before the courts we can't comment on it."

It's alleged that Huggett was found in possession of child porn on his home computer and on a number of discs between August 2007 and January 2008.

The Calgary Police Association is not involved in the case; the CPA only supports work related incidences. Still, the president John Dooks says charges like this are disturbing.

Huggett retired from the Police Service last year. He was cleared of a shooting in February 2004 in McKenzie Town Southeast after a robbery suspect armed with a knife lunged at police.

Dooks says these child porn allegations won't tarnish the Police Service's image.

"This type of allegation tarnishes every individual or every adult. I don't think it just tarnishes police officers. If it went unreported or undiscovered, I think that would be the damage."

Huggett's next court appearance is July 30th.
