It's the end of an era and another blow to Canadian retail.

After 61 years in operation, SAAN stores across the country are closing.

31 stores have either just closed or are about to close, including the one in Airdrie.

On Thursday, the store will close for good.

At its peak, there were 223 SAAN stores across Canada, but the chain, which focuses on budget family clothing, has been in bankruptcy protection since 2004.

Andrea Novotny-Lund, the manager of the SAAN store in Airdrie, says, "Everyone is very sad. They come shopping here all the time and when it's been someplace that people have been going to for so long, yeah they're all sad to see it go."

At last report SAAN was in debt to the tune of 80-million dollars.
