One man is dead after being struck by a vehicle on 17 Avenue Southeast late Saturday night.

According to police, the driver of an eastbound car became lost near 84 Street Southeast, east of Stoney Trail, and pulled over. The driver exited the vehicle and attempted to flag down passing vehicles for help.

Shortly after 11:00 p.m., a Good Samaritan stopped and approached the car. While talking to the lost driver, the man was struck by an oncoming pickup truck.

According to Chris Kalyn, EMS Public Education Officer, the unnamed 54-year-old man succumbed to his injuries on the side of the road. "Due to multiple traumatic injuries, the patient was pronounced deceased by EMS on scene and not transported to hospital."

The driver of the truck failed to stay at the scene. Police suspect the truck, believed to be a black Dodge Ram pickup truck, sustained significant damage as a result of the crash.

“It’s going to have some sort of noticeable impact damage to the front of the vehicle,” said Sgt. Colin Foster of the Calgary Police Service collision reconstruction unit.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.

A section of 17 Avenue, between 84 Street and 100 Street, was closed to eastbound and westbound traffic for several hours. The road reopened shortly before 6:00 a.m.

Anyone with information regarding the crash or the location of the damaged truck is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service, 403-266-1234, or Crime Stoppers.
