Officials with the SPCA are trying to figure out what caused the death of up to 30 horses.

The animals were found on the southeast corner of the Piikani First Nation.

Piikani First Nation RCMP officers were called and they found between 20 and 30 dead horses within the area.

On Tuesday, SPCA investigators joined police to try and figure out the cause of the deaths.

While searching the area they found five other dead animals.

Foul play is not suspected and it's believed the deaths may have been a result of the recent bad weather.

The SPCA says there are 200-300 horses feeding in that pasture. Other horses on the grazing lease were checked and found to be in generally good health.

RCMP are no longer investigating but the SPCA will continue to look into the situation.

Samples from some of the animals have been taken and sent for testing in hopes of finding a conclusive cause of death.
