After a marathon session, city council has given first reading to a proposal to redevelop the Stadium Shopping Centre, but it won't make a final decision about redevelopment until next week.
Area residents packed into a city council meeting on Tuesday to participate in a discussion on the redevelopment of a mini-mall in the city’s northwest. The meeting lasted ten hours.
Plans to change the Stadium Shopping Centre on Uxbridge Dr. N.W. have been met with mixed reviews.
The proposal calls for a mixed-use centre with business and residential units and some residents worry the development could be too big and too dense for the area.
The final proposal for the Stadium Shopping Centre Area Redevelopment Plan was approved by the Planning Commission and was presented to council on Monday.
The shopping centre is close to the Foothills Medical Centre and University of Calgary and the hope is that the new centre will meet the needs of both the community and nearby institutions.
The original shopping centre was built in 1962 and currently there are 23 stores and three unattached restaurants on the 5000 square metre retail space.
