A field house under construction south of Calgary has collapsed.
The structure's metal girders were up but strong winds Wednesday night brought the complex crashing down.
The site is now a tangled mess of metal and construction debris.
The field house is a joint project involving the M.D. of Foothills and the town of Okotoks.
When finished, the facility will include four soccer fields, a running track, a training area, locker rooms and offices.
Many people in the Okotoks region and south Calgary are looking forward to the facility’s opening which, according to Okotoks Mayor Bill Robertson, will be delayed.
“No workers were injured which is definitely a relief but with a tangled mess of metal it’s going to set us back I expect a couple months,” says Robertson. “We’ll hear a report from the builders, Scott Builders, in the near future."
Prior to Wednesday evening's windstorm, the field house was expected to open October 1, 2013.
