The warm weather over the last few weeks has melted most of the snow from city streets but it is also making some ice surfaces soft and that can be dangerous for outdoor enthusiasts.
Friday the temperature was in the double digits and the mild weather is expected to continue over the weekend.
There were some tense moments earlier on in the day after six people and a dog were spotted walking on the ice in the Weaselhead.
The group did not seem to realize the potential dangers until emergency crews showed up and told them it was not safe.
Fire crews kept a safe distance while they guided them to safety from the shore.
Fortunately no one was injured in the incident but emergency officials say people put themselves and responders at risk when they throw caution to the wind.
If you do fall through the ice, there are a few things you can do:
- Stay calm and try to keep your head is out of the water and control your breathing.
- Call for help and keep your hands on the ice shelf.
- Try to pull yourself up on the ice on your stomach and roll towards the shore, where the ice may be thicker.
- If you can't get out of the water in less than 10 minutes, stop kicking and trying to pull yourself out, and anchor yourself to the ice shelf. Continue to call for help.
If you see someone else fall through the ice, stay back and call 911.
