RCMP in Cranbrook is seeking a Calgary man who reportedly jumped into the Kootenay River to evade capture when he and another man were found with a large amount of drugs.

On September 11, members of the area drug task force found a pair of man in possession of a large amount of cocaine.

When they moved in to make an arrest, they managed to take one man into custody but the other fled and jumped into the Kootenay River to escape.

Officers and Search and Rescue personnel searched the river with the assistance of the RCMP helicopter and a police service dog team.

Jared Strecheniuk, 35, was arrested at the scene and appeared in Cranbrook Provincial Court.

He is facing one charge of possession of a controlled substance for the purposes of trafficking and is next expected to appear in court on September 16.

The missing suspect, Jason Baker, 40, is considered by police as a missing person.

Cranbrook RCMP is looking for him and is seeking a warrant for his arrest.

Anyone who knows anything about Baker’s whereabouts are asked to call their local police.
