Calgary police have charged two men in connection to the death of an 18-year-old man on Saturday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the 200 block of 10 Avenue S.W. at about 2:45 a.m. on November 23, 2013.

When they arrived they found a man suffering from critical injuries.

He was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition and later died.

The victim has been identified as 18-year-old Lukas Strasser-Hird.

Police believe he may have been involved in two altercations before he died. They say after the first incident, Strasser-Hird and his associates were separated from the situation but later the groups re-engaged outside a downtown bar.

“In speaking with the victim group, it seems like they were leaving the area when the other group recognized the victim and his group and gave chase,” said A/S/Sgt. Tom Barrow, CPS Homicide Unit.

Investigators say the second altercation involved at least two people who have been arrested and charged, but they believe others may have been involved.

“We believe that there may have been as many as seven to ten people involved but like every other bar-related incident, there may have been people coming out of the area, or been in the area at the time and would have added to the perceived number of people in the area,” said Barrow.

Paul Gervais, 18, of Calgary, is charged with first-degree murder.

Franz Emir Cabrera, 19, of Calgary, is charged with second-degree murder.

“We have reason to believe, in the case of Mr. Gervais, that there was some pre-meditation to his actions,” said Barrow.

Both are expected to appear in court on Monday.

Police say the victim did not know the accused and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause of death.
