Strong winds to batter B.C.’s South Coast

A wind warning has been issued by Environment Canada for southern B.C.’s Howe Sound Friday morning.

Strong northerly gusts will intensify near the mouth of the sound as a low pressure system approaches the coast, reaching up to 90 km/h, said the weather agency.

Environment Canada warns the brief wind storm could cause damage, before the conditions peter off as afternoon rolls in.

On the mainland, the weather will remain stable with a mixture of cloud and rain forecast for Metro Vancouver. Up to 15 millimetres of rainfall is predicted, while easterly winds are expected to linger around the 20 km/h mark.

Temperatures are forecast to reach a high of 6 degrees.

Snowfall warning

For parts of the Fraser Valley, heavy snowfall is predicted as afternoon eases into evening, the weather agency warned.

Due to easterly outflow winds plummeting temperatures to below or near freezing, up to five centimetres of snow can be expected, it said.

Environment Canada advises residents of the region, including Hope, to prepare for slippery conditions and hindered commutes as highways, roads, and walkways accumulate snow.

The conditions will ease come nightfall.
