Another blanket of snow in Calgary is marking another delay to the start of spring and lots of residents and workers in the city are saying that enough is enough.

Road conditions didn’t take too much of a hit with the overnight snowfall, but Calgarians would have city crews to thank for that.

There is still some snow and ice buildup on major routes like Stoney Trail and Deerfoot Trail, so drivers using those routes should take caution.

Police have reported few crashes overnight, but that doesn’t mean commuters should let their guard down.

City officials, however, are bemoaning their spring cleanup schedule, which has likely gone out the window with this late snowstorm.

They usually begin the cleanup in mid to late April, says Carissa Vecio with the City of Calgary Transportation Department.

“We have a team of people that work materials and research. We also have a team of people that order all of our materials so we did order extra material this year, knowing that we would likely need it. So, we are prepared with salt, gravel, pickle, and all types of materials that we need to keep the roadways safe.”

Drivers are being reminded to drive to conditions and keep the following tips in mind:

  • Clean snow and ice off your vehicle and ensure your lights and your windows are clear.
  • Give yourself extra time to reach your destination.
  • Reduce your speed and turn on your headlights.
  • Drive defensively.
  • Leave extra distance between you and the car ahead of you.
  • Fill up your windshield washer fluid.
  • When road conditions are difficult, consider using Calgary Transit.
  • Consider delaying your trip until the roads are in better condition

CTV Weather Specialist Kelsey McEwen says that the city saw about 6.7 cm on Wednesday, bringing March's snowfall total to about 21.4 cm.

Flurries are expected to continue through Thursday with another two centimetres by the end of the day.

Friday will have a bit of a break, mainly cloudy and afternoon sunny breaks.

Flurries will return for the weekend with periods of snow expected overnight on Sunday leading into sunny skies and plus temperatures to start next week.
