Calgary police have released the name of a woman who was struck and killed by a vehicle as she made her way across a southwest street on Sunday night.

Police were called to an intersection near Bay Bridge Drive for a pedestrian related collision at about 9:55 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators say a 29-year-old woman was driving an orange Hyundai Accent in the left, eastbound lane of 90 Avenue approaching 19 Street S.W.

At the same time, a 65-year-old woman was crossing 90 Avenue, southbound in the crosswalk and was hit by the Hyundai.

She suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

The deceased woman has been identified as Wendy Turnbull of Calgary.

Police say that the intersection is controlled by high visibility signage and lights and that the preliminary investigation indicates that the lights were activated.

The driver of the Hyundai was detained at the scene and released without charges.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and that they are trying to deterimine whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
