While the driver involved in a dramatic crash on the QE2 Highway north of Calgary got away with minor injuries, others who slowed down to take pictures are also going to be feeling the pain.
At about 5:45 p.m. on April 10, police were called to the scene of a rollover crash in the median of the highway near the Highway 27 overpass.
They found that a 1989 Ford Thunderbird, driven southbound by a 51-year-old man, went off the road and into the centre median, narrowly missing a large pole supporting a highway sign.
The man, from Airdrie, was taken to hospital in Olds where he was treated for a small laceration and released.
Police have charged the driver for driving without due care and attention under the Traffic Safety Act. The man says he admittedly fell asleep at the wheel.
During the course of the investigation, police spotted an alarming amount of drivers who had stopped to take photos of the scene with their cell phones.
Investigators say they’ve made notes of the licence plates of many of the drivers who slowed down and will be issuing distracted driving tickets to the registered owners via mail.
