Premier Alison Redford made a shocking announcement a speech to representatives of Alberta’s municipalities on Wednesday; she is a Boston Bruins fan.
She made the comment during the speech where she also made it clear that there would be no provincial funding for NHL arenas.
Hockey is a big part of life in Edmonton and Calgary, she admits, but that won’t translate into money for a new rink for the Oilers or any replacement for the Saddledome.
Redford says the industry is a business and should be treated in the same way as other businesses.
“At the end of the day, they’re businesses. They’re good businesses too. But government needs to create a level playing field and get out of the way so we won’t be funding for a pro sports arena.”
She added that municipalities that receive sustainable initiative money are welcome to use it for arenas if they wish.
