After nearly five years of construction, the 16th Avenue revitalization project is complete, and on Saturday, a celebration was held to mark the occasion.

Major redevelopment has taken place on a stretch of 16th Avenue North between 14th Street NW and 6th Street NE.

The road has been widened from four to six lanes, a new centre median was installed along with lighting and signal upgrades, the sidewalks were widened, additional trees planted, and new street lighting and furniture has been put into place.

The $82-million redevelopment was jointly funded by the city of Calgary and the provincial government.

"The Province is committed to investing in infrastructure to provide for a growing and changing population," said MLA for Calgary North Hill Kyle Fawcett, "By investing now we are building stronger communities for the future; communities where people can choose from different modes of transportation, thereby reducing overall emissions, traffic congestion and improving our quality of life."

"Ultimately, the improvements along 16th Avenue are designed to provide a variety of transportation modes while ensuring the area is also a desirable neighbourhood and shopping destination," added Mayor Dave Bronconnier.
