The 802 steps of one of Calgary’s most iconic buildings proved an unworthy adversary for Richard Guy on Saturday morning.
The 97-year-old was one of hundreds of participants to climb to the observation deck of the Calgary Tower during the 23rd annual Climb and Run for Wilderness fundraiser benefiting the Alberta Wilderness Association.
Saturday’s climb wasn’t Guy’s first venture up the Calgary Tower stairs. He’s taken part in the fundraiser for more than a decade.
Guy admits that, while the walk is difficult, he doesn't spend much time preparing for the climb.
“I don't do any practice,” said Guy. “I still walk to work and I keep my mind working. The important thing is to keep your mind working as well as your body.”
Prior to the start of Saturday’s climb, Guy predicted his time would be slightly slower than his times from past years.
“In days gone by, I got up there in 25 minutes. Last year it took 45 and this year it will take 55.”
The record for the Calgary Tower climb belongs to Jonathan Heinz who reached the tower deck in an eye-popping 7:50.
Saturday's event raised more than $100,000 for the Alberta Wilderness Association.
