The gunman who admitted to shooting a Calgary businessman six times finished giving testimony in his own trial in a Calgary courtroom on Thursday afternoon.

Mohamed Karim has been on the witness stand for four days.

Karim and Robert Deer are each accused in the first degree murder in Jack Beauchamp back in 2006.

Karim admits he went to the Morbank Financial offices on January 16, bringing a loaded 22 calibre weapon with him.

He says he only wanted to scare Beauchamp in order to get Morbank to back off in a business dispute with his friend Robert Deer.

The prosecution claims that the shooting was a murder-for-hire.

Karim and Deer were both originally convicted of first degree murder but were granted a new trial by the Alberta Court of Appeal.

Karim says Robert Deer was afraid of Jack Beauchamp and that he and Deer believed Beauchamp had ties to organized crime.

He says he went to the office with a gun but that the gun was only to be used in self defence and if he had to use it, he was to hurt and scare Beauchamp and not kill him.

Karim told the court, "he just said aim low, just don’t shoot up. If you have to shoot, shoot down."

Crown Prosecutor Mike Ewanson asked Karim “Did he ever tell you the damage it could do to someone's stomach?” and Karim replied, “it wouldn't kill.”

Robert Deer will not testify in Karim’s trial.

The case is being heard by judge alone and closing arguments will begin next week,
