Police are expected to release more information about the death of a woman found in the southwest Calgary community of Sunalta.

An autopsy is scheduled for later on Thursday on the body of an as-yet-unidentified woman which was found by a taxi driver.

The driver found her laying in the 1600 block of 15 Ave. S.W. at 4 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

According to police, the driver barely noticed the woman lying there; initially assuming it was a plastic bag.

"He noticed what he thought was a bag on the ground," said Duty Inspector John McCarthy. "He did do more checking and noticed we had a body. Once that was happening, EMS was engaged and determined the person was deceased on the ground."

At around the same time as the police were investigating the suspicious death, officers were called to the scene of a crash.

They found an abandoned Cadillac at that scene with heavy body damage including a damaged windshield.

Police say they don’t know if the two scenes are connected and are treating both scenes as separate incidents.

They are interviewing one person in connection with the abandoned vehicle.

The woman’s age and identity haven’t been released.

More information is expected later on Thursday.
