A Calgary mother will serve an additional year and a half in prison after being found guilty of two counts of infanticide and aggravated assault.
During a police investigation into the 2010 discovery of a live child in a northwest dumpster, Meredith Borowiec admitted she had previously given birth to two children and discarded the bodies in the trash. The bodies were never found.
On Wednesday, 32-year-old Borowiec was sentenced to an additional 18 months and one day in prison plus a three year probation order. The length of Borowiec's sentence takes into consideration the fact she has obtained 36 months of credit during her time in custody pretrial.
"You've shocked the community and you've shamed yourself. This is a terrible case," Justice Peter McIntyre said during sentencing.
In November, Borowiec, facing second degree murder charges, was found guilty of the lesser charge of infanticide.
On the count of aggravated assault, Borowiec received a suspended sentence.
Conditions of Borowiec's probation will include:
- Regular pregnancy tests conducted by a medical practitioner
- Reporting of pregnancies to her probation officer and her doctor
Following the three year probation, Borowiec will remain under a peace bond until 2024 and will be required to notify probation services, her doctor, Alberta Child and Family Services, and psychological counselors, should she become pregnant.
