Ottawa has appointed a Calgary lawyer to fill a seat on the bench at the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta in Calgary just days after two MPs came forward with a petition to put pressure on the federal government to fill vacancies.

L. Bernette Ho, who is a partner with Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP, was selected to fill one of the 14 judicial vacancies in the province.

Ho was born in the Philippines, grew up in Cochrane and studied law at the University of Alberta.

The federal government came under scrutiny earlier this week because of backlogs in the justice system.

Ho replaces Justice A.D. Macleod who became a supernumerary judge on August 31, 2017.
