Justin Trudeau and his Liberal cabinet have been sworn in and newly elected Calgary-Centre MP Kent Hehr has been appointed Veterans Affairs Minister.

Hehr was sworn in at a ceremony at Rideau Hall on Wednesday morning and will also be the Associate Minister of National Defence

He was born and raised in Calgary and has a Bachelor of Canadian Studies and Bachelor of Law from the University of Calgary.

Hehr practiced law in Calgary and was an active leader in the community before entering politics in 2008.

He served as MLA for Calgary-Buffalo for a number of years before announcing in 2014 that he would run in the next federal election.

He claimed the seat in Calgary-Centre from PC incumbent Joan Crockatt on October 19 and told CTV Calgary the day after the election that he wants to represent all the people in his riding including the ones who didn’t vote for him.

"I don't want to just represent those citizens who voted for me, I want to represent all the citizens of Calgary-Centre. That means consulting with public policy as well as being at the grocery stores, restaurants, and coffee shops discussing issues that matter to those people whether they voted for me or not."
