The Calgary Humane Society says it is investigating after 110 cats were surrendered into its care by a Calgary homeowner.

Officials have not released the address of the home, but said it is "one of the largest single intake of felines in recent years."

"Our priority is to get these cats back to a healthy state as quickly as possible and into foster homes or adopted homes before the holidays," said Anna-Lee Fitzsimmons, director of public relations for Calgary Humane Society, in a news release.

"While our team is well-equipped for situations like this, the sheer volume of animals requires additional resources and community support."

Fitzsimmons said the addition of the cats, which include a number of kittens, put a significant strain on the shelter's resources.

As a result, it is calling on Calgarians to help out by offering to foster or adopt the animals or donate money to help pay for medical treatment, supplies and care.

The agency says all of the animals are "in reasonably good health," but will be examined, treated and then spayed or neutered. The humane society aims to have all the work done before the Christmas holidays.

More information about the cats, as well as how to support the Calgary Humane Society, can be found online.
