Calgary’s police department is moving a number of officers to support frontline operations and will close two community stations in District 6 as part of the reallocation.
Officials say the initiative is in response to an increasing population and ongoing policing challenges and that 48 positions will be moved from existing units in the service.
The Brae Centre and Riverbend Community Stations in District 6 will close on May 6th in order to bring the officers to support district offices in other areas. Officials say they will work with volunteers to help them find other opportunities.
The 48 positions have been reallocated as follows:
- Twenty positions will move to District 2
- Twenty positions will move to District 3
- Four positions will move to District 4
- Four positions will move to District 5
Officials say they took the number of calls for service per officer and the overall number of calls for service in each District into consideration and that the move will help them to meet the expectations of the public and will address concerns about workload inequities across the Service.
The officers will be redeployed starting May 8 and any remaining vacancies will be filled by recruits from the May and July graduating classes.
Officials say the reallocations will ultimately mean more officers on the street.
