The Calgary Zoo, hit hard by the flooding last month, has announced that it has laid off hundreds of people because it cannot afford to keep them.
Officials at the zoo say that it is losing $160,000 every day it is closed and they’ve been forced to cut jobs to stay afloat.
The 287 jobs they’ve terminated are made up of a mixture of seasonal and permanent staff.
However, they say that all of their animal care staff is still at the zoo.
The remaining weeks of summer camps at the zoo, which were scheduled up to and including August 23, will be cancelled due to the flooding, the zoo said on their Facebook page.
All of the registrants will be contacted for refunds before the end of the day on July 5.
Zoo officials also say that they've also been forced to cancel all of their currently-booked educational programs and special events.
They will be contacting clients starting on July 8 to provide them with more information.
The facility is expected to reopen at the end of July and is scheduled to full reopen by November.
The zoo is expected to lose $5M in revenue in July alone.
