A painting by Canadian artist Emily Carr that was found in a collection at a Calgary home has exceeded its auction estimate and was sold for over $200,000 last week.
In September, Consignor Canadian Fine Art hosted a cross-country roadshow to discover hidden Canadian art and appraisers looked at over 200 pieces when they were in Calgary.
Rob Cowley went to a see a collection at a private home in the city and came across Carr’s painting called ‘European Street Scene’.
The owner didn’t know the value of the painting and Cowley figured it would fetch about $150,000 at auction.
“They knew what they had, they weren’t aware possibly of what the current value would be for the work and certainly are delighted by the outcome, just like we are,” said Cowley,
The watercolour was painted by Carr in 1911 during her training in France.
“We certainly had confidence in that, but we were delighted when it was a very popular painting throughout our auction previews and then during the auction itself it reached $276,000, so we're delighted,” said Cowley.
The piece was purchased by a private buyer at auction last Thursday.
