A 38-year-old man is facing charges in connection to a rollover crash on Memorial Drive that killed a woman and sent a second woman to hospital with life threatening injuries.

Police say a Ford Fusion was speeding eastbound on Memorial Drive on July 2 at about 3:00 a.m. when it crashed into a raised median on 5A Street N.W.

The vehicle rolled and slid on its roof across both eastbound lanes of Memorial Drive, over a paved pathway and then came to rest after it hit a large tree.

Kanaye Renfrew, 30, was the passenger in the front seat of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 32-year-old woman, who was in the backseat, was taken to hospital in critical condition, where she remains.

Dale Camera Neisz, 38, was also taken to hospital with serious injuries and the investigation determined that excessive speed and alcohol were factors in the fatal crash.

“Any collision where we have fatalities, always going to be rough scene and especially one that has a high speed factor involved in it, the scene was quite large and obviously a fair bit of devastation to the vehicle,” said Acting S/Sgt. Colin Foster, CPS Traffic Unit. “The driver remained on scene, upon our arrival, and has been very accommodating, assisting us with that investigation.”

Neisz is charged with:

  • Criminal Negligence Causing Death
  • Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm
  • Impaired Driving Causing Death
  • Impaired Driving Causing Bodily Harm
  • Operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level exceeding 80mg% (.08), causing death
  • Operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level exceeding 81mg% (.08), causing injury

Police have issued warrants for Neisz’s arrest.

“We have been in touch with the driver, Mr. Neisz, and he has indicated that he will be coming back to Calgary. He’s away on a pre-booked vacation,  there was no reason to have prevented him from going on this holiday, but he is due to be coming back to Calgary in the very near future at which point we will be executing those warrants,” said Foster.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Renfrew's young family, click HERE for more information.
