Dale Neisz pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing death and impaired driving causing bodily harm on Monday in connection with a fatal 2016 crash where his blood alcohol content was nearly double the minimum impairment designation.

In the early morning hours of July 2, 2016, a Ford Fusion was travelling at a high rate speed in an eastbound lane of Memorial Drive when the car struck the centre median near 5A Street Northwest. The vehicle flipped and the toppled car left the road and collided with a large tree.

The passenger seated in the front of the car, 30-year-old Kanaye Renfrew, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 32-year-old woman who had been in the backseat was transported by ambulance to hospital in critical condition.

Neisz, who was 38 at the time of the crash, suffered serious injuries in the collision.

A camera installed in a Checker Cab that the Fusion had passed recorded the fatal crash. The video was submitted as court evidence but sealed in order to protect the families of the victims from viewing the images.

According to the agreed statement of facts, Neisz’ blood alcohol content at the time of the crash was 0.155.

A sentencing date has yet-to-be scheduled.
