Two pedestrian overpasses in southwest Calgary will be removed in the near future and another seven aging bridges are nearing the end of their run according to the City of Calgary.

The overpass to Westbrook Mall, spanning Bow Trail between 33 Street and 37 Street Southwest, is nearly 50 years old and was built at a time when accessibility was not a consideration. Construction on a structure with a wider bridge deck and less steep ramps is scheduled to begin this year.

The bridge above Crowchild Trail near 54 Avenue Southwest will need to be removed. Details regarding plans for a replacement overpass are expected to be released this spring.

According to city officials, pedestrian overpasses are inspected every two years and the structures are graded. Inspectors have identified another seven bridges that will need to be replaced within 10 years.
