A 25 year veteran of Calgary’s police force has been appointed interim chief to replace outgoing Chief Rick Hanson.

Hanson announced his retirement at the end of February after 38 years with the service.

Superintendent Paul Cook has served in almost every area of Calgary’s police service and will assume the role effective March 13.

Cook has moved  through the ranks from Constable to Commander and is a certified hostage negotiator, and certified national level 2 incident commander.

He is a recipient of both the Distinguished Service Award (2004) and the Exemplary Service Medal (2010) and served as the Executive Officer for Chief Hanson.

“I am delighted with the appointment of Paul Cook to Interim Chief,” said Rodney Fong, Calgary Police Commission Chair.  “He knows how the executive suite works, he is connected to the members, and he is an exceptionally accomplished senior officer and respected leader.”

Cook will take over the top job until the Calgary Police Commission appoints a new Chief.
