Calgary fire crews used saws to extricate a man after he was hit by a CTrain and became stuck underneath.

Emergency crews were called to the Sunnyside LRT Station at about 3:00 p.m. Friday for reports of a collision between a train and pedestrian.

Emergency officials say an individual was struck by a northbound train and then became trapped underneath it.

Firefighters used saws to take off the aluminum wheel guards and free the man.

“When we arrived we did find that there was a person that was under the CTrain. We had to use specialized tools to cut some of the parts of the CTrain to remove him,” said CFD Dist. Chief Paul LeBlanc.

The man in his 50s was taken to hospital by EMS in serious potentially life threatening condition.

LRT service north and southbound was shut down in the area and shuttle buses were brought in to help commuters get home.

The collision is under investigation.
