One person is dead after a Saturday afternoon collision near the intersection of Highway 8 and Highway 22.  The crash occurred just before 1:00 p.m.

According to officials, the driver of an SUV attempted to pass another vehicle on the undivided highway when it collided head-on with a semi truck.

“We have witness accounts indicating that the vehicle crossed the centre line and it came into the path of an eastbound moving semi transport truck,” says Sgt. Dave Hardy, Cochrane RCMP Integrated Traffic Unit.

The driver of the SUV, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The semi driver escaped from the cab of his truck moments before it erupted in flames.  The semi driver suffered minor injuries in the crash and was treated by paramedics.

Emergency crews are on the scene and Highway 8 has been closed to traffic.  The debris from the crash spread for nearly 150 metres.

“Highway 8 has had its fair share of conditions, this area here in particular,” says Sgt. Hardy.
