Calgary Fire crews tackled a smoky blaze Saturday afternoon in southeast Calgary.

A fire broke out in the basement of a duplex on 26th Avenue and 43rd Street SE around 2 p.m.

It spread to the upper floor and smoke could be seen billowing out of the upper balcony.

"On arrival all the residents were evacuated out of the building and the fire was contained to the east unit," said Bill Besselink with the Calgary Fire Department.

No one was injured, but two cats were found deceased in the home.

Investigators continue to look into the cause of the fire.

So far there is no damage estimate.
