A sudden and furious storm managed to skirt the city before slamming into Airdrie on Thursday afternoon bringing with it heavy wind and huge hail stones.
The storm blew in at about 5:00 p.m. and produced heavy rain and large hail stones in many areas.
A thunderstorm watch and warning was issued by Environment Canada for several areas of southern Alberta.
The weather agency says the storm moved eastward at about 30 km/h.
There were no reports of major damage but windows in some cars and homes were smashed and lawns were covered by a blanket of white ice.
Airdrie RCMP responded to 24 hail related calls between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., including a collision involving five vehicles on Yaneey Valley Blvd. One person was trapped in a vehicle and required extrication, but no one was injured in the crash.
