Emergency rooms in Calgary and Edmonton will be getting a much needed facelift, thanks to a $50M cash injection from the province.
Health Minister Stephen Mandel made the announcement of the funding on Wednesday.
Mandel says efficient ERs are paramount to a functional health care system. “If people can’t move effectively out of the emergency rooms into the hospitals, then they can’t move through a system.”
The Peter Lougheed Centre and the South Health Campus in Calgary, along with the Misericordia, Grey Nuns, and Royal Alexandra Hospitals in Edmonton are all slated to receive the upgrades.
The Alberta Health Services is also expected to open 311 new restorative care spaces in the two cities; 186 in Calgary and 125 in Edmonton.
Those beds, officials say, will help seniors get back to a normal life after a hospital stay.
The funding, which will be implemented over two years, is from Alberta’s Supportive Living Initiative.
