A severe thunderstorm swept through southern Alberta on Sunday flooding basements, yards and streets and knocking out power to a number of areas.

Alberta Emergency Alerts issued a warning about overland flooding in the Chestermere area at about 8:30 a.m. and says that there were several reports of flooding in the area.

Fortis Alberta reported some power outages in the area because of lightning from the storm.

Environment Canada says a thunderstorm capable of producing large hail and heavy rain moved into the Rocky View and Wheatland County areas on Sunday morning.

Residents in the area were advised to avoid fast moving water on roadways and rapidly rising creeks and streams.

Officials cautioned those living in low-lying areas to keep an eye out for flooding and to be prepared to move to higher ground if required.

"This whole basement is flooded. We have like 18 inches of water, completely flooded," said resident Marta Novak.

"Yeah it's coming and we've got that much more before the lake crests over," said William Taylor.

The City of Chestermere reponded to the situation and hydro trucks were brought in to clear drains and sewers.

“While short, this was an intensely severe storm that brought an amount of water that overwhelmed our systems” said Director of Emergency Management Steve Bagley. “We are working hard to assist residents and restore services as quickly as possible."

"Fortis Alberta reports that power has been restored to many parts of the City and is working on the remaining areas, Chestermere Lake water levels are under control, and City staff are working to clear backed up storm drains as quickly as possible. West Merganser Drive remains impassable at this time."

Chestermere Fire Services advised residents of the following:

  • All residents should avoid travelling unless necessary.
  • Residents should avoid going into the flood waters.
  • Residents should isolate power to affected premises.
  • Emergency situations should be reported to 911.
  • Non emergency questions can be directed to the Fire Hall 403-272-9878.

Some flooding was also experienced in the Langdon area and crews there deployed extra pumps to the areas that were the most affected.

In Calgary, the storm caused a few catch basins on city streets to overflow and ENMAX dealt with a number of power outages, mostly in the northeast part of the city.

The airport experienced some delays because of a lightning advisory and travellers were told to check the status of flights.
