Record temperatures are expected to peak in Alberta on Tuesday and Calgarians could see a repeat of Monday’s rolling blackouts across the city.

The strain on the province's electricity grid forced the Alberta Electric System Operator to issue a directive to reduce power consumption on Monday.

The scorching temperatures, and resulting heavy use of air conditioners across the province put pressure on the power grid and forced officials to schedule rolling blackouts.

The rotating power outages lasted about 30 minutes and Albertans were asked to voluntarily reduce their power use until 6:00 p.m. Monday night.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement on Tuesday warning that temperatures in the low 30s, combined with high humidity levels, would make temperatures feel more like 40 degrees.

“The high humidex values will make for very uncomfortable conditions. It is advised to stay in an air conditioned place or seek shade when possible, drink plenty of water and limit physical outdoor activity," the statement said.

On Monday, Alberta broke 19 heat records and set a new record high temperature of 33.1 degrees at the Edmonton airport.

The blackouts were felt in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and Lethbridge.

In total, six generating stations were affected which hasn't happened since July 2006.

While the Stampede grounds are exempt from the blackouts, it was also affected by a power outage on Monday.

The Skyride had to be evacuated and an auxiliary diesel engine was fired up to allow staff to get everyone off the ride safely.

Stampede organizers say it appears their power problems were not related to outages in the rest of the province.

AESO says that the soaring temperatures drove demand for electricity to an all-time summer high on Monday.

The record was set at 2:00 p.m. when usage climbed to 9,885 magawatts breaking the old record of 9,552 MW set in 2011.

The all-time high for Alberta was set on January 15, 2012 at 10,609 MW.

AESO says it should have an adequate supply cushion for peak times on Tuesday as long as there is no loss of gereration.
