Officials in High River say that the threat of flooding is low and that water levels in the Highwood River are not high enough yet to flood the area.

A rainfall warning continues for the High River, Okotoks and Claresholm areas and forecasts are calling for up to 100 mm of rain before it tapers off on the weekend.

The Alberta River Forecasters report indicates that the Highwood River peaked just after midnight at 107.7 cm/sec.

Typically the town does not experience flooding from the river until it surpasses the 200 cm/sec mark.

Another 40 mm of rain is expected to fall in the area in the next 24 hours and the Highwood River is predicted to peak at 130 to 140 cm/sec.

Town officials are asking the public to stay away from the river’s banks as the water is running very fast and soil has eroded from the edge in some areas.
